Early in the proceedings
Many cases are decided before charges are brought. The earlier the defence begins, the more can still be shaped during the investigation.

Kanzlei Hagemann de Grzymala in Aachen defends private individuals, executives and companies. The firm acts early in the proceedings, works meticulously through the file and stands entirely on its clients’ side.
“Being a lawyer is my profession. Being a certified specialist in criminal law is my passion.”
People who come to the firm are usually under pressure: a police summons (Vorladung) is in the letterbox, the police have searched their home or a relative is in custody. What counts then is a defence that acts quickly, explains clearly and stands on your side without reservation.
Criminal defence means taking a side. In every case, the firm stands on its clients’ side, facing the police, the public prosecutor and the court. Giving up is not an option.
Being clearly on one side does not mean picking every fight. Sometimes having the proceedings discontinued is a better aim than a long trial. Sometimes it is the other way round. You decide which path is right together with your defence lawyer, as soon as the facts are on the table.
Clients are partners in this. A defence works best when both sides speak openly with each other and share what they know at an early stage.

Many cases are decided before charges are brought. The earlier the defence begins, the more can still be shaped during the investigation.
Before you comment on the allegation, your defence lawyer inspects the investigation file (Akteneinsicht). Only the defence receives the complete file (§ 147 StPO). Only then do you decide whether and how to make a statement.
What you confide in us stays within the firm. The lawyer’s duty of confidentiality applies from the first conversation (§ 43a Abs. 2 BRAO). Without your consent, nobody hears anything from us, not your employer and not your family.
You learn where your case stands, what options you have and what risks each of them carries. In plain words, so that you can take the decisions that are yours to take.
If you live abroad or cannot travel to Germany, the firm advises you confidentially by video conference. This matters above all in extradition proceedings. The language of the consultation is agreed at first contact. If needed, a sworn interpreter can be involved.
For every case, the team works out its own strategy. Your contact remains Karolin Hagemann de Grzymala, LL.M., in person.

The firm defends private individuals, the self-employed and executives as well as medium-sized and large companies.
Private individuals usually come to us for a specific reason: a police summons, a penalty order (Strafbefehl), a house search (Durchsuchung) or an arrest. The firm supports companies when the public prosecutor is investigating, and preventively through compliance and internal investigations.
The firm’s office in Aachen is close to where Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands meet. Cases with a cross-border element are therefore part of everyday work, above all extradition proceedings and the European Arrest Warrant. If you live outside Germany, our guide Arrested in Germany explains your rights.

Every defence begins at the desk: reading the file, checking the case law, discussing the line within the team.
